The Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR) community is deeply saddened to announce the sudden passing of Distinguished Professor David Johnston on Sunday, 19 January, following a medical event. Professor Johnston was a visionary leader, a dedicated scholar, and a cherished colleague whose contributions to disaster risk reduction (DRR) have left an indelible mark on the field.
Professor Johnston served as the Chair of the IRDR Scientific Committee from 2013 to 2015, during which he played a pivotal role in advancing the IRDR mission. Under his leadership, the IRDR organized the 2014 International Conference and made significant contributions to the drafting and reviewing of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.
In addition to his role as Chair, Professor Johnston established and directed the IRDR International Centre of Excellence (ICoE) on Community Resilience. He also co-led the IRDR National Committee of New Zealand, fostering collaboration and innovation in disaster resilience research and practice. Through these initiatives, he spearheaded numerous case studies, research papers, training programs, and DRR activities that have had a lasting impact on communities in national, regional and global level.
Professor Johnston’s legacy is one of profound dedication to building resilient communities and reducing disaster risks. His work exemplified the values of collaboration, excellence, and compassion, inspiring countless colleagues and friends in the DRR community. The IRDR will forever cherish his contributions and continue to honor his memory by advancing the mission he so passionately championed.
