Recently, experts from China, Germany, UK, Indonesia and Switzerland calls for a united, holistic and One Health approach to respond to the climate change crisis (Zhang et al. 2022: From concept to action: A united, holistic and One Health approach to respond to the climate change crisis. Infectious Diseases of Poverty, doi: 10.1186/s40249-022-00941-9). The advocacy is led by Prof. Renhe Zhang, Director of IRDR International Centre of Excellence on Risk Interconnectivity and Governance on Weather/Climate Extremes Impact and Public Health (ICoE-RIG-WECEIPHE), Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and vice-president of Fudan University. 26 representatives from international organizations including IRDR, UNEP, ISC, WMO, WHO and top universities/institutes from China and Germany supported the advocacy.
It is unequivocal that human influence has warmed the planet, which is seriously affecting the planetary health including human health. Adapting climate change should not only be a slogan, but requires a united, holistic action and a paradigm shift from crisis response to an ambitious and integrated approach immediately. Recognizing the urgent needs to tackle the risk connection between climate change and One Health, the authors provide four key messages and recommendations that with the intent to guide further research and to promote international cooperation to achieve a more climate-resilient world (Fig 1).

This paper is an outcome of the pre-session entitled ‘Climate Change and One Health’ organized by ICoE-RIG-WECEIPHE at Shanghai, on June 4th, 2021, as a part of the IRDR 2021 conference (https://www.shine.cn/news/metro/2105289737/). It is in line with the ISC Science Mission ‘Unleashing Science – Delivering Missions for Sustainability’ (in particular of health and wellbeing) and is a strong support to 9 priorities highlighted in the ‘A Framework for Global Science in support of Risk Informed Sustainable Development and Planetary Health’, and 7 targets outlined by the Sendi Framework on DRR.
