Historical Cities and Hydrogeological Disasters: Expert Workshop in Rome

The Italian National Academy “Accademia dei Lincei”, held an expert workshop entitles “Resilienza delle città d’arte alle catastrofe idrogeologiche: successi e insuccessi dell’esperianza Italiana” at its headquarters in Rome, Italy, on 4-5 November 2014.

The workshop reflects a long-term interest of the Academy and associated bodies in linking the preservation of cultural heritage and disaster risk prevention. In this context, Accademia member A. Sgamellotti will join the IRDR-ICSU-led delegation of the Science and Technology Major Group (STMG) at the United Nations in Geneva later in November, where he will represent the Inter academy Panel in the negotiations leading towards a renewed and revised intergovernmental agreement HFA-II on disaster risk reduction and resilience building.

The workshop, next to researchers and arts experts, also attracted officials from the relevant ministries, regional and local departments of civil defense and cultural heritage. Topics discussed included round tables on the special case of Venice and on the devastating floods of Florence ion the mid-1960’s. All round-tables brought together a wide range of different sets of technical expertise and of administrative and political responsibilities.
