At the culmination of July’s Our Common Future Under Climate Change (CFCC15) (see IRDR July 10 news) conference which convened close to 2000 academics from almost 100 countries, an outcome statement was issued that explains that “to limit warming to 2°C, emissions must be zero or even negative by the end of the 21st century.” Institutions are encouraged to sign on the outcome statement. The 29th Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was held on 11-24 November 2024 in Baku, Azerbaijan bringing together leaders of states and/or their representatives from about 200 countries. The outcome of the conference was a new finance goal “to help countries to protect their people and economies against climate disasters and share in the vast benefits of the clean energy boom”.
