Background Information

The Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR) is an international scientific programme cosponsored by the International Science Council (ISC) and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), and supported by China Association of Science and Technology (CAST). IRDR aims to usher in an inclusive, safe and sustainable world by promoting a better understanding of disaster risk and the effective use of risk science in decision-making.

The International Programme Office of IRDR (IRDR IPO) is hosted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Aerospace Information Research Institute (AIR) of CAS, which serves as the Secretariat of the Programme. Led by an Executive Director, the IPO has Science Officer, Communications Officer, and Administrative Staff. Key Responsibilities and Specific Tasks:

  • Develop, improve and maintain website: writing and editing website content, update including collecting and revising news items from networks and partners; managing the calendar of events, blogging, uploading announcements and publications, and enhancing social media functions.

  • Publications: design posters, layouts of publications and reports; support editing and preparation and oversee the design and printing of IRDR related publications (e.g. annual reports, quarterly newsletter, project reports, posters, etc.)

  • Event Management: assist in communicating and planning conferences, workshops and other programme activities.

  • Other communication duties assigned by Executive Director.

Requirements

üLanguageFluency in written and spoken English; ability to express oneself clearly in a variety of settings. The working language of the IPO and the IRDR Programme is English. 

üEducation: Senior undergraduate students, graduate students or above. Major in communications, (science) journalism, public/business administration, international relations, or other fields related to disaster risk reduction will be an advantage.

üKnowledgeA basic understanding of the main issues and challenges faced in disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation and sustainable development, and preferably relevant communications experience in these related themes. 

üTechnical SkillsProficiency in the use of software programs such as the MS Office suite, the Adobe suite, in particular Acrobat, Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop and video editing software. Experience in website design and management, proficiency in the use of social media platforms and other electronic communication tools.

üThe Communication Intern is expected to have a good sense of professionalism and responsibility for the task assigned, and be teamwork oriented under a multi-cultural international working environment.

The 29th Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was held on 11-24 November 2024 in Baku, Azerbaijan bringing together leaders of states and/or their representatives from about 200 countries. The outcome of the conference was a new finance goal “to help countries to protect their people and economies against climate disasters and share in the vast benefits of the clean energy boom”.

IRDR participated in the Discussing and sharing the current understanding of ICH and climate change linkages, case studies on impacts and roles of ICH safeguarding, potential entry points to integrate ICH in climate change policy frameworks and mapping concrete actions to strengthen ICH safeguarding in the face of climate change in East Asia.
