Scheduled for October 2026, the FEMISE conference will be held under the theme "Navigating Disruptions and Transitions in the Mediterranean: Policies for Resilient, Innovative and Inclusive Economies”. The IRDR ICoE-RE&SRT session (Topic 2) is titled “Sustainability Transitions in Times of Disruption: Economic Resilience, Risk, and Systemic Transformation”.
Call for Contributions
Contributions are invited that explore how Mediterranean economies—and economies facing similar challenges—can navigate sustainability transitions under conditions of systemic disruption and risk. Priority will be given to research that integrates economic analysis with risk governance, climate resilience, and development policy.
Suggested Topics
Submissions may address, but are not limited to, the following areas:
How climate change, natural hazards, geopolitical instability, and technological disruptions interact to reshape economic resilience in Mediterranean economies.
Analytical frameworks and economic models that capture systemic risks and cascading impacts across sectors and regions.
The effects of disasters and climate shocks on economic recovery, labour markets, and development pathways in Mediterranean economies.
Lessons from recent shocks (pandemics, climate extremes, energy crises, conflicts) for building more resilient economic systems.
Risk-informed economic policies supporting sustainable transitions while strengthening resilience.
The role of disaster risk reduction (DRR) in economic planning, investment strategies, and infrastructure development.
Integration of risk and resilience considerations into public and private investment frameworks for green and digital transitions.
Governance mechanisms and institutional arrangements for integrating climate adaptation, disaster risk management, and sustainable development strategies.
Methodological and Geographical Scope
Research contributions employing empirical, theoretical, modelling, or policy-analysis approaches are welcomed. Submissions may focus on the Euro-Mediterranean region as a whole or on specific countries or sub-regions, particularly the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean. Contributions that identify best practices and lessons for the Mediterranean region are also welcomed.
