Interviewing Chris Field and Steve Sparks on disaster risk reduction

“Road to Paris”, a science communication platform that is hosted by IRDR co-sponsor ICSU (“where science, policy and economics meet on our way to the 2015 climate conference in Paris”) recently published two interviews with key members of the scientific community present at the 3rd WCDRR in Sendai.

UntitledStephen Sparks from the University of Bristol/UK and member of the original team that prepared the Science Plan for IRDR, is among the top-cited volcanologists. In 2015 he received the Vetlesen Prize, which is considered the Nobel prize of the Earth Sciences, for work that has resulted in a “clearer understanding of the Earth, its history, or its relations to the universe”. 2Chris Field is the founding director of the Carnegie Institution’s Department of Global Ecology and Professor for Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies at Stanford University. He has been co-chair of Working Group II of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which led the effort on the IPCC Special Report on “Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters to Advance Climate Change Adaptation” (SREX – 2012). In this two-week high-level event, IRDR co-organized a session with Peaceland Foundation and MAP-AQ entitled: “Strengthening Anticipatory Action: Inclusive Approaches to Global Disaster Resilience Building”.
