King’s College London is looking for two Research Associates to undertake research within a live aid programme and to influence programming in an adaptive management approach to research/practice co production.
1. Research Associate in the Department of Geography (BRACED portfolio)

Based at the Strand Campus with its vibrant mix of academic disciplines, this appointment is associated with two DFID funded projects, both with three year durations and seeking to enhance resilience planning at the interface of development and humanitarian work in sub-Saharan Africa (Burkina Faso and Ethiopia). Both are led by Christian Aid. The projects include multiple partners from the UK (e.g. BBC Media Action, UK Met Office) and international and local partners (e.g. OXFAM Intermon, Action Contre la Faim, Internews Europe, Direction Générale de la Météorologie (Burkina Met) and Radio Rurale. Research will sit at the interface of humanitarian and development programming and provides a rare ‘natural experiment’ to analyse the reaction of local institutions when rural communities are exposed to improved weather and seasonal forecasting services, and outcomes in terms of household resilience and transformation in places exposed to climate-related food insecurity. Working not only across different local social contexts in each country but across Burkina Faso and Ethiopia adds considerable analytical opportunity.

2. Research Associate in the Department of Geography (Urban Africa: Risk Knowledge)

Based at the Strand Campus with its vibrant mix of academic disciplines, this appointment is a fulltime, three year post, awarded as part of a £3.3million ESRC-DFID programme of research entitled Urban Africa: Risk Knowledge (Urban ARK). The postholder will work closely with the programme principal investigator Professor Mark Pelling, and lead on delivering original research on social and policy elements of urban disaster risk and its association with urban development pathways and decision-making practices, applying a FORIN methodology to examine historical determinants of contemporary urban risk.Urban ARK is a major investment by DFID and ESRC into urban resilience in Africa. Structured around five urban settlements of varying size, social and economic context, hazard profile and development trajectory: Nairobi, Dhaka, Mombasa, Ibadan, Niamey and Koranga (Malawi). Urban ARK’s international and interdisciplinary research will be arranged in four key work packages (WPs). Future planning is core to our mission with two dedicated PhD students, training workshops and visiting fellows as well as an Open Science conference to foster early career researchers.
