         Venue: Geneva International Conference Centre, Geneva, Switzerland

Target participants: The conference aims to bring together the full diversity of the science and technology community, policy makers, practitioners and researchers from all geographical regions, at local, national, regional and international levels to discuss how the science and technology community will best support the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030.

Purpose: The outcomes of the conference are to

  • Launch the UNISDR Science and Technology Partnership for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, and
  • Discuss and endorse the UNISDR Science and Technology road map to 2030 to define the expected outcomes of the science and technology work under each of the four Sendai Framework priorities for actions and the ways to monitor progress and review emerging needs

Conference topics

  • High Level Panel: Introduction of the UNISDR Science and Technology road map for the implementation of the Sendai Framework.
  • Work stream 1: The Scientific and Technical Partnership to support the implementation of the Sendai Framework:
  • Work stream 2: Understanding disaster risk, risk assessment and early warning
  • Work stream 3: Leveraging science through capacity development and research
  • Work stream 4: Sharing terminology, DRR indicators and monitoring systems of the Sendai Framework for coherence with the Sustainable Development Goals, and climate change and other global agreements
  • High Level Panel: Agree and endorse the UNISDR Science and Technology road map for the implementation of the Sendai framework.

The Conference Organizing Committee: With coordination by the UNISDR Scientific and Technology Advisory Group (STAG), the core committee includes the International Council for Science, IRDR, UNU, UNESCO and WMO and more widely as organizing partners, many other science and technology networks and scientific research institutions at all levels and all regions.

  • The conference is open to all interested participants representing the full diversity of the science and technology community, policy makers, practitioners and researchers from all geographical regions, at local, national, regional and international levels.
  • There is no conference fee. On application, UNISDR may consider supporting the participation of a few science and technology delegates from Least Developed Countries
  • The conference website will be live in 2nd week of August 2015 and will be regularly updated, where:
    • The UNISDR Science and Technology Partnership and Scientific and Technology Advisory Group (STAG) terms of reference will be made available
    • A call for abstracts will be open between 10th August and 31 October 2015.
    • The Conference registration will be open from 1st September to 31 December 2015.
    • In October the draft UNISDR Science and Technology road map will be made available.
