“Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (The Brundtland Report 1987). Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland has been a global leader in promoting sustainable development for the benefit of humanity for more than 30 years. She was awarded the 2014 Tang Prize in Sustainable Development for her innovation, leadership and implementation of sustainable development that laid out the scientific and technical challenges for the global community to achieve a better balance of economic development, environmental integrity, and social equality for the benefit of all humanity.
Dr. Brundtland and the Tang Prize Foundation support the award to promote sustainable development, especially for public health, in developing countries. She aims to promote the involvement of younger women researchers from developing countries in the issues of sustainable development and equitable health systems.
The Gro Brundtland Award includes one-week of science activity in Taiwan – including symposiums, forums, lecturers and exhibitions – about global issues related to sustainable development in public health. This is the first year of the Award which will be awarded annually for at least three years. Each year, five qualified female researchers from developing countries and Taiwan will be invited and subsidized to present their work during the week. Building a network and support system among female scientists from different countries will be emphasized and promoted throughout the event.

WHAT IS FUNDED
‘The Gro Brundtland Award’ offers you an opportunity to meet and discuss with other female researchers in the same field and establish international connections. It’s a great chance to introduce your own research to other international research groups and it promotes future collaborations between institutions. Round-trip economy class airfare to Taiwan, 6-days’ accommodation, some meals and transportation during the week will be provided.
ELIGIBILITY
Five young female scientists, one from Taiwan and four from other developing countries, will be invited to attend the Gro Brundtland Week after their application materials are evaluated. Applicants must:
- Be female
- Hold a research doctorate (e.g., Ph.D., Ed.D., Sc.D., D.B.A., M.D.)
- Be less than 40 years of age
- Be citizens of a developing county or Taiwan
- Do research related to public health & sustainable development
EXPECTATIONS OF RECIPIENTS
- Attend and be involved in all the arranged activities during the week.
- Make an oral presentation of their research in a symposium during the week.
- Propose and orally present an idea or concept of new research collaborations and directions at the final presentation.
- Submit a final report about the week to the organizer no later than 20 days after the end of the Gro Brundtland Week.
DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS – 11 DECEMBER 2015 – REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICATION
Candidates should register and then submit the following documents (in pdf format) on-line:
- Personal Statement: Applicants should attach a description of their research work including specific information demonstrating how their work is related to sustainable development & public health, particularly noting how it contributes to their own country. Maximum length is 1500 words (about 3 pages of single spaced type) plus literature citations.
- Curriculum vitae: Please list publications and graduate coursework on research methodology or experience relevant to the main themes of the Gro Brundtland Week (5 page maximum).
- Letters of reference: Two reference letters are required; one should be from your department chair. Referees should comment on the applicant’s suitability for the Award, including relevant information on scientific originality, professional productivity, and demonstrated ability to work in groups.
