IRDR ICoE-SEADPRI-UKM Workshop on Geohazards and DRR – Call for Application
26 July 2018

IRDR ICoE-SEADPRI-UKM, the Malaysia Window to Cambridge at Univerisiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (MW2C@UKM), is convening a training workshop on Geohazards and Disaster Risk Reduction on 18-20 September 2018 in Penang, Malaysia. The workshop will be held in conjunction with the National Geological Conference 2018 convened by the Geological Society of Malaysia and their key partners.

The three-day event will cover two days of technical sessions followed by a field visit on the final day. Several aspects of geology will be covered including geohazards and engineering geology, geomechanics, geoenvironment and geophysics, among others. The field visit will focus on geohazards in the Penang Island, conducted by researchers from the Newton-Ungku Omar Fund Project on Disaster Resilient Cities: Forecasting Local Level Climate Extremes and Physical Hazards for Kuala Lumpur, led by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s Southeast Asia Disaster Prevention Initiative (SEADPRI-UKM) and University of Cambridge in collaboration with other partners.

The training is designed to build the capacity of scientists from Malaysia and the region on hazards assessment for disaster risk reduction. There will be special focus on communication of risks by an expert from the United Kingdom. Trainees will be required to develop and submit full manuscripts (guidelines enclosed) on topics relevant to climate influenced hazards such as landslides, mudflows, floods as well as emerging and cascading events. All manuscripts will be reviewed to be considered for publication in the Bulletin of the Geological Society of Malaysia (Scopus Indexed). Alternate publication arrangements will also be considered.
