This 2022 Year End Update highlights a number of IRDR activities during the 2nd half of the year.

GPDRR2022

The seventh session of the Global Platform (GP2022) was organized by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) from 23 to 28 May 2022, and hosted by the Government of Indonesia in Bali Island. Researchers and institutes of IRDR actively participated in this Global Platform, in-situ or online, and contributed to the discussions at multiple events in Bali. Policy briefs and reports were published to present the latest contributions from IRDR community, together with IRDR Statement at GP2022.

IDDRR2022

This year, the International Day focused on Target G of the Sendai Framework: “Substantially increase the availability of and access to multi-hazard early warning systems and disaster risk information and assessments to people by 2030.” IRDR community together with its the science and technology stakeholders observed IDDRR2022 by delivering messages, participating workshops, publishing reports in response to the call for Early Warning for All. IRDR ICoE Activities

Although 2022 was a transitional period for IRDR, IRDR ICoEs continued to work for IRDR research objectives and missions for DRR capacity building. Two recent examples are: a) IRDR ICoE-Taipei launched Ten-Year Report providing documentation to summarize the outcomes of its ten-years’ service; b) IRDR ICoE-RIG-WECEIPHE established a joint lab “Risk and Governance of Climate Change on Atmospheric Environment and Public Health in the Context of Carbon Neutrality” for the Asia-Pacific region.

Atlas of Silk Road Disaster Risk under IRDR Flagship Project

Since 2016, IRDR Flagship Project SiDRR has made tremendous effort in multi-scale risk assessment, DRR engineering solutions and policy recommendations for the Silk Road Region. 2022 saw a new and major volume of DRR knowledge pack Atlas of Silk Road Disaster Risk published with the compilation of the studies and assessments.

IRDR Pilot Studies

IRDR Pilot Study will be one of the key research mechanisms for the implementation of the Research Framework. IRDR IPO provides seed funds for the members of IRDR community or IRDR partners to deliver the research priorities proposed in the Research Framework.

In 2022, IRDR Pilot Study on the governance of climate change impact on integrated health was conducted by IRDR ICoE-RIG-WECEIPHE. The output of this study was published as the IRDR Work Paper Research themes trend and future priorities in the field of climate change and health. More pilot studies collaborated with IRDR partners are in the process and will have outcomes available in 2023. 

IRDR and Open Science

To IRDR, scientific knowledge and data for DRR are the natural parts of the open science development. IRDR has made in its concept proposal for IRDR Phase II that all its deliverables for this Research Framework will be part of global effort toward the promotion of open science and open access, which has been led by ISC and UNESCO at the global scales.

In 2022, IRDR worked with UNECSO IKCEST to explore the open science for DRR and provided its insights, particularly regarding sharing of DRR data, knowledge and capacities at UNECO IKCEST meetings. Meanwhile, IRDR established the new partnership with Global Open Science Cloud (GOSC) of CODATA to explore open data infrastructures in DRR as well as training for upgrading the DRR data and knowledge sharing capacities between developing countries.

IRDR Partnership and coordination for the implementation of the Research Framework

This year, IRDR advocated the Research Framework and promote the implementation of the Research Framework by continuing its cooperation with the existing partners and exploring more DRR partners. IRDR thus engaged in a large number of trainings, workshops, meetings and conferences over last six months, including:

• IRDR established official partnership with WFEO through its International Committee on Disaster Risk Management (CDRM).
• IRDR entered the new partnership with Ministry of Emergency Management of China APEC cooperation and ASEAN DRR networking.
• IRDR established new partnership with Innovation Center for Risk Governance at Beijing Normal University on multi-stakeholder co-design for DRR solutions.
• IRDR worked with Horizon Programme to enhance the DRR capacity building for the young generation.
• IRDR worked with International Research Center of Big Data for Sustainable Development Goals (CBAS) with focus on coherence of SDG and DRR.
• IRDR continued the partnerships with International Consortium on Landslides (ICL), Global Earthquake Model (GEM), Early Career Researchers Network of Networks (ECR-NON), Integrated Risk Governance Project (IRGP) of Future Earth, South Asia Alliance of Disaster Research Institutes (SAADRI), Institute for Disaster Management and Reconstruction of Sichuan University, Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment of CAS, WMO Regional Training Centre at Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology on DRR research, international initiatives, capacity building.
