The Centre for Disaster Resilience, School of the Built Environment, University of Salford, UK and RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia are organising the next event in the series of “Building Resilience” International Conferences. The conference is entitled: “International Conference on Building Resilience: Individual, institutional and societal coping strategies to address the challenges associated with disaster risk” and will be held at Herritance Ahungalla, Sri Lanka from 17th – 19th September 2013.
The Conference will be held in association with the UNISDR’s 2010-2015 World Disaster ReductionCampaign ‘Making Cities Resilient’ which addresses issues of local governance and urban risk .
All papers will be subjected to a double blind peer review process.
Conference Theme:
The 2013 International Conference on BuildingResilience will encourage debate on individual, institutional and societal coping strategies to address the challenges associated with disaster risk and conference themes are mapped as follows:
- How can we increase Community engagement towards increasing societal resilience?
- How can national and local governments be empowered to incorporatedisaster risk in their development plans?
- How can we promote inclusive development to increase resilience?
- How can we create public private partnerships to address disaster risk?
- How can we manage disaster risk in development planning?
- What will be the role of the built environment professions in addressing disaster risk?
- How can we promote social transformation through post disaster reconstruction?
- How can we facilitate evidence-based policy?
Venue:
Occupying a most unique site near the Southern city of Galle, the Geoffrey Bawa designed Heritance Ahungalla will be the conference venue. All keynote speeches, parallel sessions, meetings and meals will be held at the hotel. Accommodation includes 162 rooms, each fully airconditioned with private balcony and a spectacular view of the Indian Ocean.
