Save the Date: Beijing Science Dialogue and IRDR Satellite Symposium | 19–21 October 2026

We are pleased to announce that the Beijing Science Dialogue will take place from 19–21 October 2026 in Beijing, China, under the theme “Science in a Complex World – Science for a Better Future”.

Jointly organised by the International Science Council (ISC), the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and the Beijing Municipal Government, this major gathering will bring together more than 250 scientific organisations from across world regions and scientific disciplines to exchange perspectives on emerging scientific challenges, strengthen international cooperation, and explore opportunities to advance science-informed solutions for sustainable development and societal resilience.

Open to the wider public, the three-day Dialogue will feature:

  • Day 1 | 19 October: Pre-event workshops and Opening Ceremony

  • Day 2 | 20 October: Full-day satellite symposia across 11 thematic areas, hosted at various venues across Beijing

  • Day 3 | 21 October: High-level plenary sessions and Closing Ceremony

IRDR Satellite Symposium | 20 October 2026

As part of the Beijing Science Dialogue, IRDR will host an interdisciplinary satellite symposium on 20 October 2026, under the theme "Science, Data and Partnerships for Disaster Risk Reduction”.

The symposium will examine how scientific knowledge, data, and international research partnerships can strengthen disaster risk reduction in a rapidly changing world. It will also explore how these approaches can contribute to advancing the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Professor Zhang Renhe, Director of the IRDR International Centre of Excellence (ICoE) at Fudan, has been honored with the Sverdrup Gold Medal for his fundamental contributions to understanding Asian monsoon variability in connection with ocean-atmosphere interactions in the Northwest Pacific and coupled modes such as ENSO.
