Alik Ismail-Zadeh is a geophysicist promoting international cooperation in Earth and space sciences and in disaster risk reduction. He is Senior Fellow and Research Professor at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Karlsruhe, Germany. His expertise covers theoretical and computational geodynamics, geohazard risk analysis, disaster science and diplomacy. He is an author of over 150 peer-reviewed papers, chapters, and several books. His recent research on integrated disaster risk assessments (Nature, 2015), a paradigm shift in disaster science (Natural Hazards, 2017), disasters caused by European floods (Nature, 2021), disaster diplomacy (Progress in Disaster Science, 2021), and disaster drivers (Natural Hazards, 2022) have contributed to understanding disaster risks and its reduction. He was a founder and Chair of the IUGG GeoRisk Commission and the inaugural President of the Natural Hazards Section of the American Geophysical Union (AGU). Ismail-Zadeh was the IUGG Secretary General (2007-2019) and the inaugural ISC Secretary (2018-2021). He contributed to activities of CTBTO, European Commission, GEO, UNDRR, and UNESCO related to disaster risk reduction.
